Burning Paint is Paranoid Image's first full album! Recording began in January 2018 and was released in June 2018.

Aside from one cover song, our premiere album is comprised of all original music created by members of Paranoid Image. The sound... we've termed the phrase "acoustic alternative". This is because we set out to create fun, memorable, dance-inspiring, melodic, very rhythmic and often emotional music using mostly acoustic instrumentation that comes together in a very surprising and unexpected way. The songs on this album touch numerous genres, from bossa nova and grunge to tango, disco, and bachata... and some nice ballads too!

There are two or three percussionists on each song, playing mostly hand drums or other Latin-style drums, as well as mandolin on each song, banjo on some, plus guitar and the grand piano. These provide the interesting and creative music as the foundation for our singer's otherworldly and very unique voice.

Outside the acoustic / percussion realm to which we normally stick, the disco song, "Safest Place", features electric guitar and high-hat and the grunge song, "Guitar Jam", features electric guitars and electric bass.

As one great musician said after asking us what type of music we play at one of our shows (and we said "it's hard to explain"), he heard it and said, "Well, I still don't know what the hell to call it, but I LOVED IT!" For our first album - we believe you will too!

If you purchase the CD, there is a full booklet with all of the lyrics as well as some incredible artwork. The artwork belongs to we-renowned artist Xi Zhang. We are grateful for his stunning artwork!

Song 1 - Faded Memories

Music by Christopher Malone | Lyrics by Elizabeth Nelles

This almost orchestral song and the idea behind the melody/singing was written by Christopher sort of out of nowhere. Fortunately, Elizabeth had great lyrics that could be applied to this very PI song. Features a very cool rhythm / string solo in the middle with guitar, mandolin and banjo.

Sara Geller - Vocals
Christopher Malone - Piano
Al Buffone III - Congas, Floor Toms, Chimes
Lauren Savelle - Mandolin
Elizabeth Nelles - Banjo
Jim Vaughan - Acoustic Guitar

Song 2 - Burning Paint

Lyrics by Sara Geller | Music by Christopher Malone

Sara had this strange dream in which she was painting a picture and decided to burn the edges of the painting. "A little for effect", as the song says. Unfortunately, the painting went up in flames. But it was only a dream and it resulted in a poem. Christopher set it to music, and there it is - the album's namesake song.

Sara Geller - Vocals, Snapping
Christopher Malone - Piano
Al Buffone III - Timbales, Cowbell, Cajon
Lauren Savelle - Mandolin
Elizabeth Nelles - Djembe
Jim Vaughan - Acoustic Guitar

Song 3 - Broken

Song by Caustic (Scifidelic)| Arrangement by Christopher Malone

Christopher and Sara met in 2015 in the band Scifidelic. Sara had recorded one of Scifidelic's more eerie and mellow songs. When they decided to create the band Paranoid Image, they wanted to transform this song into a bachata. Broken is PI's first bachata song!

Sara Geller - Vocals
Christopher Malone - Piano, Upright Bass
Al Buffone III - Bongos, Shaker
Elizabeth Nelles - Djembe
Jim Vaughan - Acoustic Guitar
Lauren Savelle - Mandolin

Song 4 - I'm Gonna Keep Your Heart

Song by TV on the Radio | Arrangement by Christopher Malone

In January 2018, Paranoid Image released our first single, "Keep Your Heart", a cover of Christopher's brother Kyp Malone's TV on the Radio song. It was very well received - and our new version that features improved percussion and guitar with our newest members and remixed is even better!

Sara Geller - Vocals
Christopher Malone - Piano
Elizabeth Nelles - Djembe, Congas, Shaker
Al Buffone III - Congas
Lauren Savelle - Mandolin
Jim Vaughan - Acoustic Guitar

Song 5 - Home

Lyrics by Elizabeth Nelles | Music by Elizabeth Nelles and Sara Geller

Sometimes, it's not easy to go home. Elizabeth wrote about how it "doesn't feel like home anymore" in her poetic, direct and powerful style. She composed the song and worked on the melody with Sara to create one of PI's most driving, intense and popular songs.

Sara Geller - Vocals
Elizabeth Nelles - Banjo, Floor Toms, Backup Vocals
Christopher Malone - Piano
Lauren Savelle - Mandolin
Jim Vaughan - Acoustic Guitar
Al Buffone III - Congas

Song 6 - Ukrainian Lullaby

Song by Lauren Savelle

One of PI's most heartfelt songs was inspired by Lauren Savelle's personal experience, resulting in this beautiful song. Sad that the Ukrainian guy left, but fortunate for PI and anyone who loves touching music. Thunderous timpini-sounding floor drums, a catchy rhythm, and the almost tearful mandolin make this song very unique.

Sara Geller - Vocals
Lauren Savelle - Mandolin
Christopher Malone - Piano
Elizabeth Nelles - Banjo
Al Buffone III - Floor Toms, Cajon
Jim Vaughan - Acoustic Guitar

Song 7 - Guitar Jam

Song by Elizabeth Nelles

What? Not all acoustic instruments? Well, blame that on Elizabeth! Not long after joining PI, she bought this cool amp and started experimenting with it. The result, a song that is full of cool sounds, layered voice, great PI-style rhythm, and even some backwards guitar and voice masking! "No one's ever talked back to me like that!"

Sara Geller - Vocals
Elizabeth Nelles - Electric Guitar, Backup Vocals
Christopher Malone - Electric Bass, Sinister Voiceover
Jim Vaughan - Electric Guitar
Lauren Savelle - Mandolin
Al Buffone III - Floor Toms, Congas

Song 8 - Safest Place

Music by Christopher Malone | Lyrics by Sara Geller

It's disco! Once again, PI had strayed from our all-acoustic instrumentation and added some funky electric guitar and the rare use of a high-hat to make this song rock (however, still no drum set - check out the percussion!). This song is about Christopher's and Sara's relationship. Get up and dance!

Sara Geller - Vocals
Christopher Malone - Piano
Jim Vaughan - Electric Guitar
Elizabeth Nelles - Djembe, High-Hat
Al Buffone III - Congas, Tambourine, Cajon
Lauren Savelle - Mandolin

Song 9 - 18/19

Song by Lauren Savelle

Lauren wrote this song on the 18th and recorded the sample on her mandolin on the 19th. Then a little bit after that, she played it for some of the band. Christopher suggested the Bossa Nova rhythm and the music took a life of its own - PI-style, including a cool solo featuring our percussionists in the middle!

Sara Geller - Vocals
Lauren Savelle - Mandolin
Christopher Malone - Piano
Al Buffone III - Congas, Tambourine, Cajon, Timbale
Elizabeth Nelles - Djembe
Jim Vaughan - Guitar

Song 10 - Burning Paint Ballad

Lyrics by Sara Geller | Music by Christopher Malone

At rehearsal, Al said "'Burning Paint' is so cool... I bet a slow version would be dope!" We tried it, loved it, and here it is: the other version of the song from which the album takes its name. Includes Christopher picking and bowing on upright bass and a beautiful guitar solo by Jim.

Sara Geller - Vocals
Christopher Malone - Piano, Upright Bass
Jim Vaughan - Guitar
Lauren Savelle - Mandolin
Elizabeth Nelles - Banjo
Al Buffone III - Chimes
